The SDSS Data Release 2 - Access to 2 Terabytes of Data Online
(Bring your laptop!)
Ani Thakar
I will describe the second data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey,
due to be publicly distributed in early 2004. Data Release 2 (DR2) has
been available to SDSS collaboration members (including everyone at JHU)
since Nov 5, 2003 via the DR2 SkyServer website at the restricted access
URL
http://skyserver2.fnal.gov/collab/ (for all JHU IPs)
or http://skyserver2.fnal.gov/collabpw (from any IP, login reqd)
The DR2 catalogs contain over 100 million images and 350k spectra that
are served up by the DR2 Catalog Archive Server (CAS) at the above URL.
I will demonstrate the tools available in the CAS, including query forms
for imaging and spectro queries, direct SQL queries, image cutout and
finding chart service and proximity (cross-id) search queries. The
public DR1 CAS has a wealth of educatonal material that can be used for
student class exercises. These will be updated for DR2 soon.
